From Metal to Magic: Exploring Leads, Musical Inspirations, and Techniques in My Kontakt Libraries

Hello dear friends,
Iā€™d like to share with you a bit about the process and some additional information regarding the artists and musical bands that inspired me to create the Lead sounds in my Kontakt libraries.

Basic Lead: This is a basic lead sound. I created it from a simple mix of ā€œSineā€, ā€œTriangleā€, ā€œSawā€, and ā€œSquareā€ waves, but at a simple level, to have a super basic lead sound with the intention of showing that with my program, powerful lead sounds (and more) could be created.

This basic lead sound is very flexible. By adjusting parameters and adding effects, you can recreate sounds similar to those of “Angra”, “Make-Up Project” (Saint Seiya), “Warmen”, or any lead sound from your favorite artist that you can imagine.

You can even create sounds for atmospheric lead solos by adding, for example: a light low-pass filter, mild distortion, a chorus or phaser, delay, and reverb. You can find these Lead sounds in the ā€œDerivativesā€ folder under the names ā€œSoul.nkiā€ and ā€œGaita.nkiā€.

As for me, I was able to obtain a sound similar to the one used by “Jens Johansson” in the albums of “Yngwie Malmsteen”. These lead sounds can be found in the ā€œDerivativesā€ folder under the names ā€œDragons.nkiā€ and ā€œGentle.nkiā€.

Black Lead: Inspired by the solo in “Black Diamond” by Stratovarius, I used a “Roland JD-800” along with some analog distortion effects, amplifiers, and cabinets to achieve this sound.

Brutal Lead: This was the lead sound I created for my project ā€œMetal Variusā€ (Metal V). I was inspired by the lead keyboard used by “Insania Stockholm (SWE)” on the album “Sunrise in Riverland”. I should clarify that it was only an inspiration, and the sound is completely different, but I liked it so much that I started using it in my personal projects.

Dist Lead: A lead sound I created, inspired by the electric guitar of “Timo Tolkki” used in the solos of Stratovariusā€™ album “Fright Night”. This lead sound is derived from my ā€œBasic Leadā€ sound, but it is achieved through analog processes (I used distortion, cabinet, amplifier, and effects units). This lead sound is inspired by Tolkkiā€™s guitar but designed to have a lead essence.

Dragon Lead: This was a lead sound I really liked. I was trying to recreate the lead sound used by “Jens Johansson” on Yngwie Malmsteen’s “Trilogy” album. I used a Hammond C3, if Iā€™m not mistaken, and although the result wasnā€™t similar, I loved the sound I was able to create.

E. Organ Lead: Inspired by the keyboards used by Jon Lord in Deep Purple, I used a Hammond C3 with distortion and some effects.

Ecliptic Lead: Inspired by the lead sounds from the album ā€œEclipticaā€ by “Sonata Arctica (FIN)”.

Epic Lead: Inspired by the second album “Eternal Crusade” by “Phoenix Rizing (NOR)”, the second album “Crown of Ages” by “Projecto (ITA)”, the second album “Follow Me” by “Wonderland (ITA)”, and other artists who used this type of sound in their songs.

Fire Lead I and Fire Lead II: Inspired by the lead sound used by Jens Johansson during his time with Yngwie Malmsteen. If my memory serves me right, I used a Yamaha DX7.

Games Lead: One of my favorites. I created a lead sound inspired by video game sounds, something that reminds me of Mario Bros, Top Gear, SNES, anime, and similar things, while still sounding metal enough for brutal solos. With a few modifications, it can mimic sounds from the album “Beyond Reality” by “Dreamtale (FIN)”, among others.

Ghost Lead: Inspired by the lead sound of keyboardist “Christian Lorenz” from “Rammstein (DEU)” used in iconic songs such as “Du Hast”, “Feuer Frei”, among others.

Guitar Lead: I created this based on the solos from my Ibanez electric guitar, to guide me in making lead solos and also for creating synthesized guitar solos needed for certain video game songs, like for example: Megaman X6 – Gate’s Laboratory.

Industrial Lead: Inspired by the sirens in the “Feuer Frei” track by “Rammstein”, as well as lead sounds from electronic music.

Majestic Lead: This was a lead sound I created while trying to recreate the sound of the albums by the band “Symphony X (USA)”. Although I couldn’t fully achieve it, I liked the sound I created, so I included it in the list.

Monster Lead I: Inspired by the lead sounds used by former “Dream Theater (USA)” keyboardist Derek Sherinian.

Monster Lead II: Inspired by the lead sounds of keyboardist “Jordan Rudess” from “Dream Theater”.

Otaku Lead: Inspired by the sounds generated by the synthesizers from the “MAKE-UP” project for “Saint Seiya”, such as the themes “Overture”, “You’re Phoenix”, “Pegasus Fantasy”, or “Love Fighter”.

Peruvian Lead: Inspired by the lead keyboards used by the Peruvian band “Nautiluz”, such as in their album “Leaving All Behind”.

Power Lead I: Inspired by the lead solos of “Sonata Arctica” from albums “Silence”, “Winterheart’s Guild”, “Reckoning Night”, and “Unia”. This lead sound blends well when mixed with the “Guitar Lead”. Using both and balancing the volumes, you can achieve much more attack in the lead. Alternatively, when used with “Power Lead II”, balancing volumes and adding legato mode and some portamento or glide, you can create a pleasant texture similar to the solos used by “Sonata Arctica” in some other solos from the aforementioned albums.

Power Lead II: Originally created to be used with “Power Lead I”, and also to create solos for some songs by “Sonata Arctica”, like “Black Sheep”, in combination with electric guitar in thirds.

Prog Lead I: Inspired by the former “Dream Theater” keyboardist Kevin Moore, from the album “Images And Words”, like the first lead used in the song “Pull Me Under”.

Prog Lead II: Again inspired by Kevin Moore, from the album “Images And Words”, such as the second part of the lead solo in “Pull Me Under”.

Shred Lead I: Originally created to imitate the keyboard used by “Richard Andersson (SWE)” from “Time Requiem”, “Majestic”, “Space Odyssey”. I didnā€™t fully achieve it, but I loved the sound I created. This sound also lends itself to recreating iconic 90ā€™s electronic, trance, and techno music.

Shred Lead II: My second attempt to recreate the sound of “Richard Andersson” using a different analog synthesizer and other effects. I didnā€™t fully succeed, but I liked the result for virtuosic solos with lots of attack.

Soft Lead: Initially created for the opening solo of “The Power of One” by “Sonata Arctica”. This lead sound is perfect for creating “Gospel”-style solos and other metal solos that require smoothness and calmness in the lead sound.

Solo Lead I: This lead sound I created was inspired by “Jens Johanssonā€™s” lead sound in his live performances. Although I didnā€™t use the same synthesizers he uses, I was able to recreate the essence of his sound. Itā€™s one of my favorite lead sounds.

Solo Lead II: This lead sound was created to be used with the modifications from my program. Itā€™s 35 or 50% of the base for the ā€œSolo Lead Iā€ sound, which had already been fully processed to use with fewer modifications. The “Solo Lead II” was made to be used by adding effects such as distortion, amplifiers, and cabinets. With some modifications, you can achieve a sound similar to the lead sounds used in the albums “Elements” by “Stratovarius”.

Solo Lead III: Inspired by “Jens Johansson”, I used a “Korg Wavestation SR”, the rack version of the “Wavestation”, to be used with a MIDI controller.

Space Wave Lead: Inspired by the lead sound from the track “A Million Light Years Away” by “Stratovarius”. This sound is brutal.

Swedish Lead: Inspired by the second album of the Swedish band “Insania Stockholm”, “Sunrise in Riverland”. With some modifications, you can achieve a sound similar to their third album “Fantasy (A New Dimension)” and also to the albums “Beyond Reality” and “Difference” by “Dream Tale”. If I recall correctly, I used a “Roland JV-2080” module to create these sounds. This is another one of my favorite lead sounds.

Symphonic Lead: Inspired by the Italian keyboardist “Alex Staropoli” from “Rhapsody of Fire” on the album “Dawn of Victory”. I used a “Yamaha Motif ES7”, and although itā€™s not the same “Roland Fantom G7” that “Alex” uses, I was able to get a very similar sound.

Vampire Lead I and Vampire Lead II: Inspired by the early lead sounds used by “Michael Pinnella” from “Symphony X”, such as the album “The Divine Wings of Tragedy”. I used a “Korg Triton Extreme” synthesizer to create these sounds.

Virtuous Lead: Inspired by Swedish keyboardist “Richard Andersson”, I used a “Roland JD-800” to create these sounds. The “JD-800” is the keyboard that “Richard Andersson” uses, and one of the most used by “Jens Johansson” throughout his career.

Yuh Lead: Inspired by Japanese keyboardist “Yuhki” from “Ark Storm” and “Galneryus”. I was able to create this sound by mixing sounds from a “Roland V-Synth”, “Roland AX-Synth”, and another old analog synthesizer.

Conclusion: You can create sounds similar to bands like Dragonland, Children of Bodom, or any artist you can imagine. Itā€™s just a matter of choosing a basic lead sound and gradually modifying it to achieve the desired sound.

Additional note; With these basic libraries: You can obtain sounds similar to your favorite artists. Iā€™ve been able to recreate lead sounds used in songs like Love & Hate and Through The Night by Make-Up Project, and even lead sounds from Latin American bands outside the metal genre, like CorazĆ³n Serrano from Peru, Noche de Brujas from Chile, or Argentinaā€™s Cumbias Villeras. Itā€™s all about imagination and adjusting parameters and effects.

My product allows you to recreate these sounds without needing external plugins; you just need to have Kontakt 5.6.0 Full or higher versions installed to take full advantage of its potential.

With this product, Iā€™ve not only recreated lead sounds, but also church organs, electronic organs, synthesizers like those used by a-ha in Take On Me or Journey in Separate Ways, sounds of rubbed glass, synthesized strings, intimate pianos, pads, and more. Iā€™ve even recreated old video game effects, like Atari sounds, car acceleration, atomic bomb effects, and sensations that transport you to other galaxies.

If you acquire this product, you not only get a musical instrument; you get a wide collection from many years of work. You can modify all its parameters and recreate many sounds.

If youā€™re interested, you can write me a message and request a MIDI file with the solo from your keyboard. Iā€™ll gladly show you how it would sound with my program and its different presets.

If you have your own samples and want to give them the extreme functionalities of my program, I teach you how to do it in the manual. This way, you can improve your samples without worrying about design or programming.

Sending a big hug to all who made it this far.

Sincerely,
Luis Angel Pisfil (Hero)
A humble creator of all of this.
